Lady Lever Art Gallery

Dad, Grandma, Mum and that must be Keith looking at his shoes wondering how old he has to be before he can wear Winklepickers? But that’s another story!

Being the youngest of four, I often struggle to know exactly who is in the photo or when and where it was taken. But being the youngest also means I’m lucky to have older siblings to tell me! However, although I don’t know when this was taken (best guess would be about 1950) I do know exactly where… outside The Lady Lever Art Gallery.

When I was about eight years old and in a gang of two with Leslie Ebbrell, getting up to all sorts in the village, one game we used to play was walking around the outside of the gallery. Not much of a game I hear you say! Well, can you see the ledge just above my Dad’s shoulders? You see, that ledge was only about six inches wide and went all around the building so, we used to dare each other to walk it... all the way round! I never fell off but was chased off many times by gallery staff, happy days!

This photo was probably taken opposite Windy Bank which is where they all lived before Mum, Dad and Keith moved to Liscard and then back to the village with Rob to settle in The Ginnel in 1952 when Rob was one year old. Anne moved into the Ginnel in 1955 and me in 1962!

If you ever find yourself in Port Sunlight the gallery is well worth a visit, but just keep your feet on the ground!

1950?

  1. Is that definitely Keith and about 1950 or 1949? Keith looks no older than three? Could he be as young as two? I am hopeless with children's ages!

  2. Certainly looks like Keith...so I'm thinking maybe 3 or 4, making it 1950/51. Poor Gran....sadly l never really 'connected' with her - not like grandparents & grandchildren of today! She always appeared stern but then she did lose her husband early on & single handedly brought up 3 boys. Also losing her other son Sam at just 3 years old must have been unbearable.💔😞

    1. That is something I didn’t know Anne, that Dad had another brother called Sam. If I was told about this then I have obviously forgotten. This blog is doing what I hoped it would, creating an archive of photos, memories and forgotten facts about our family! 😀

    1. I may well have fallen from that ledge Anne, but I could also have forgotten! But, yes there was another time where I did fall and ended up with stitches! Sarah has just confirmed you can still see my scar on my forehead! I tried to jump across the stone steps that lead into The Dell off Park Road… I didn’t make it and ended up in Clatterbridge Hospital! 😂
